A note on the Content of the Plays and Our Instructional Philosophy

Just a word on the content of these plays and our thoughts on the production as a whole and our philosophy as theatre instructors.

We understand that the content of these plays is different from the type of material previously performed at SES, however we firmly believe all of it is middle-school appropriate, and there are copies of the play available if you would like to read them.

We in the Theatre Department believe that Theatre is a perfect opportunity to explore age-sensitive issues and come to terms with them in a healthy and ergonomic way. Theatre is supposed to make you think, grow, change, and learn, and to present a different take on life. It is also for enjoying, of course! But this year, as part of the change in staff in the Theatre department, and as a part of our new philosophy, we want to challenge the students and expose them to the true spirit of drama, which includes talking about and portraying things that are perhaps not readily comfortable. Just as the spring Musical is always completely all ages and all friendly, so the fall show is only for middle schoolers and attempts to cater to some of the more serious issues students at that age face.

The material we have chosen is neither extremely potent nor extremely difficult, but there are some references to more adult material. It is all still PG-13 though, I promise! Again, we would be more than happy to give you a copy of the play to peruse at your leisure. There is also a synopsis of each play provided on this blog, but don't read it if you don't want to spoil the endings!!!
