Welcome to the blog!

WELCOME ONE, WELCOME ALL to the Sunnyside Theatre blog!!!

Thanks for visiting the Sunnyside Theatre blog!

On this blog you can check rehearsal times, and get any announcements or changes we've made. Because of copyright laws, we cannot post the scripts online here, but all the instructors have copies so please just contact us if you need another one!

We welcome suggestions, comments, concerns and quotes, but please keep everything appropriate! This is a professional space and will be connected to the school, so write as if you were in school please! Because of this we will be reviewing the comments before we allow them to be posted, but I promise to make it a snappy process.

A note on the Content of the Plays and Our Instructional Philosophy

Just a word on the content of these plays and our thoughts on the production as a whole and our philosophy as theatre instructors.

We understand that the content of these plays is different from the type of material previously performed at SES, however we firmly believe all of it is middle-school appropriate, and there are copies of the play available if you would like to read them.

We in the Theatre Department believe that Theatre is a perfect opportunity to explore age-sensitive issues and come to terms with them in a healthy and ergonomic way. Theatre is supposed to make you think, grow, change, and learn, and to present a different take on life. It is also for enjoying, of course! But this year, as part of the change in staff in the Theatre department, and as a part of our new philosophy, we want to challenge the students and expose them to the true spirit of drama, which includes talking about and portraying things that are perhaps not readily comfortable. Just as the spring Musical is always completely all ages and all friendly, so the fall show is only for middle schoolers and attempts to cater to some of the more serious issues students at that age face.

The material we have chosen is neither extremely potent nor extremely difficult, but there are some references to more adult material. It is all still PG-13 though, I promise! Again, we would be more than happy to give you a copy of the play to peruse at your leisure. There is also a synopsis of each play provided on this blog, but don't read it if you don't want to spoil the endings!!!

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns!

Synopsis of all of the One Acts

Here is a brief but detailed overview of the material we have chosen for this year's fall One Acts:

Duet for Dog and Bear by Sybil Rosen, a 10 minute play about a little tiny yapping dog who trees a big brown bear and they have a conversation about which species did the right thing; domestication vs remaining wild. Then the Dog's owner and two reps from the Department of Environmental Conservation show up, tranq the bear (non-violently!) and promise to return the bear to the mountains.

Madame Skoodle Noodle and the Poodle Doodle, a completely ridiculous play about an art competition in which the competing artists are dogs. One dog is found murdered and a reporter shows up to cover the story. Hilarity ensues, and in the end it turns out that the dog is not dead after all, he was just proving a point about the stress of a dog artist's life and the play finishes with all characters marching to support animal rights.

The Least Offensive Play in the Whole Darn World, by Jonathan Rand, a play about a machine called the ScriptCleaner5000, which cleans any and all offensive parts out of plays so that they can be put on in the schools. The play consists of two salespeople who pitch the product by showing various scenes that have been changed by the machine. The scenes have been changed to cut out any offensive material, and are now school appropriate! They include a fight from Romeo and Juliet in which the swords have been replaced with balloons to clear the violence from the show, a rap song with all the offensive lyrics changed to be school appropriate, the aftermath scene with Jason and Medea in which the victims are replaced with watermelons, and the song Hard Knock Life from our very own Annie with the lyrics changed to be bright and sunny to replace the original depressing ones. The show ends with the chandelier scene from Phantom of the Opera changed to be so funny you'll cry laughing, but I won't spoil the surprise now!

The Hitchhiker.

Since we are performing on Friday the 13th of November, we decided to include one spooky play. Rick Adams (the main character) is driving across the country to California, where a job is waiting for him in Hollywood. But he keeps seeing the same hitchhiker everywhere he goes! This begins to scare him more and more until he finally calls his mother and discovers that she is in the hospital recovering from the shock of her son, Rick Adams' death!
